About us
The Ashtanga Vinyasa system
Yoga is a traditional discipline aimed not only at conditioning the body but at steadying the mind and clarifying awareness. Through coordinated movement, breath and attention, the practice gradually softens restlessness and cultivates patience, balance and presence in daily life. The physical benefits arise naturally, but the deeper purpose is to develop a calm, attentive state from which we relate more clearly to ourselves and the world around us.
We offer two approaches - Ashtanga and Rocket, suitable for beginners through to experienced practitioners and teachers, each expressing the same tradition through a different doorway.
We teach using the Ashtanga Vinyasa system because it preserves yoga as a method rather than a collection of exercises. The sequence is practised in a consistent order, linking movement to breath so attention gradually becomes steady and inward. Over time the repetition reveals patterns in the body and mind (tension, habit, reaction) and gives space for them to change. Progress is measured not by how advanced a posture looks, but by how calm and controlled the breath remains. This is why the tradition endures. The practice doesn’t rely on variety or novelty, it relies on patience, discipline and direct experience, allowing the student to develop clarity, resilience and a lasting relationship with the practice.

The centre offers multi-level classes grounded in tradition. From the expansive and playful approach of Rocket Yoga as developed by Larry Schultz, to the disciplined method of Ashtanga Vinyasa taught by Pattabhi Jois, all tracing back to the teachings of Krishnamacharya, each class expresses a different aspect of the same lineage here at Agnes Water Yoga.
